Web site look and feel

In building this site I've tried to keep to standards as much as possible which inevitably means either using "hacks" to get it to display properly in IE or accepting that some users will not have the best experience with the web site.

I've tried to use the minimum of "hacks" to keep the site standards based but at the same time allow it to work acceptably in IE versions less than 7 (ie version 6 and 5).  This means that there are still some problems with rendering on older browsers (as you might have noticed).

There is a light at the end of the tunnel though.  Microsoft made a very brave decision when they brought out IE version 7!  They decided that this version would be the first version that made a good attempt at following the standards.  IMNSHO, this is a "good thing" for everyone!

The result is a big sigh of relief from a very large number of web site developers around the world (me included).  I say brave because there are a lot of web sites on the Internet that were optimised for IE 5 and 6 and never worked well in other standards based browsers.  Now the maintainers of these sites are madly scrambling to modify their web sites to suit the new IE 7 which is (more or less) standards based.

Some of the possible rendering problems you might face here if you use IE version 5 or 6:

  • The Gallery does not display in neat rows
  • The header image is different from the one used for other browsers
  • The background image (of the Cocky) displays twice, the first time without transparency and the second time transparent (as it's supposed to be).
  • The menus will only work in IE 5 or 6 if you have "javascript" enabled.

If you are having problems with the web site, please first try to upgrade your browser to the latest version (especially if you are using IE).  If problems persist, then by all means contact me and I'll try to fix it.
