When I first began this whole drawing animals lark I was asked if I did commissions of them. I was a little hesitant at the time but since they were for family and friends, I decided I would give them a go.

The examples below are some I have done and my technique and skill has improved a bit since these were completed, but I was still pretty happy with them. The scans I did at the time didn't really do them justice.

thumb_AmyandtheTiger This commission was completed for the daughter of a friend of a friend who was photographed overseas with this beautiful animal. This was 2 separate photos. (A4)
thumb_RachaelwithSophieandherhorse My step niece Rachael loves her horse and her best friend Sophie. This piece was commissioned as a special Christmas gift. It was done from 3 photos. (A3)
thumb_SuesCats These three spoiled felines rule the roost in the UK where they live with their owner and her husband. They loved this piece which was also done from 3 separate photos (A3)
So, as to whether I do commissions now....I would say, unequivocally yes, yes I do! Laughing

These are more recent commissions completed between September and November this year (2009)

PatchandShepSmaller This commission was completed in September as a lasting memorial to two best mates, both of each other and their owners. Done in graphite.
Size: 297 × 420 mm
VickieandBoonie.smaller Ah the happy couple! A surprise portrait commissioned by their friends to be a lasting happy reminder of the day he asked her for her hand in marriage! Rendered in graphite.
Size: 297 × 420 mm.
Zac1smaller This is 10 year old Zac, a beautiful long haired German shepherd done in soft pastels. (The photo of the portrait is not a good one as I had to take it on a phone camera.)
Size: 470 x 680mm
Zaccloseupsm A close up of the detail of Zac's portrait.

The stuff you need to know...

  • The time taken for a commission would depend on my workload but would generally be completed in approximately 6 to 8 weeks depending on the size and complexity of the work, (and whether my brain is in gear) so please allow plenty of time. If it was likely to take longer or my workload is heavy then of course I would let you know beforehand. If it's ready sooner then wooohoooo!!
  • A preliminary sketch and work-in-progress scans would be sent to you on a regular basis for approval and any changes you may want.
  • The portraits would be done in either A3 or A4 size but different sizes can be negotiated.
  • Now a bit that I don't like but is necessary I'm afraid....a 25% non refundable deposit would be required before the start of any new commission with the remainder paid on completion of the work. This is because the work could not be sold to anyone else of course and while I'm doing a commission, I would not be able to do any other work.

Okay, now to the nitty gritty of what you need to do so that I can do what I need to do...

  • I need several good (or at least fairly decent), high resolution images to work from. These can be digital photos or digital scans of photos. Basically, the better the image, the more detailed the drawing although I know it's difficult if the subject has passed away, so the best you can find in those cases.
  • If it's a wildlife commission then I can either work with your photos or trawl through my sources for one that would be just fabulous dahhhling.
